US Grade 2 - 3
In this class, students will be working on strengthening reading comprehension skills. We will practice re-reading skills, using background knowledge, and questioning to deepen understanding of the text. Intro (5 mins) - We will begin our class with introductions and an icebreaker. Content (30 mins) - I will begin our content piece by sparking interest and triggering background knowledge of our topic through questioning and discussion before we look at the text. We will then take turns reading the passage out loud (always by choice). Students will be given an opportunity to examine the text for any unfamiliar or confusing words and write them down. Then we will discuss what the text means and how it relates to each of us. I will take the students through a series of 5 discussion questions that move up in difficulty as we go, but allow everyone to think about the text in a more meaningful way. I will bring the students back to the vocabulary that they wrote down earlier and introduce the vocabulary focus words from the passage. We will discuss the vocabulary words, parts of speech, and use them correctly in a sentence. Closing (10 mins) - Students will have an opportunity to play a memory Game on ABCYa! called "Monster Mansion." I will be teaching this class throughout the entire 45 mins and students will have an opportunity to discuss the material and ask questions as needed. I provide a supportive and safe environment, in which students feel confident to add to the conversation. Students will be interacting with me and each other through reading text, discussions, and games.
