Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Welcome! 📖

Understanding what you read is essential for academic success. This course is designed for students aiming to boost their reading fluency and comprehension skills. Group learning offers numerous benefits, making it a cost-effective and less stressful alternative to one-on-one tutoring. In a supportive group environment, students not only learn from each other but also develop social skills and forge new friendships.

During this reading club, students will master strategies to improve their grasp and retention of text. They'll participate in activities that enhance reading fluency by reading aloud, practice identifying and understanding new vocabulary, and hone their comprehension abilities. Games, including both fiction and non-fiction games, as well as video clips, will be utilized to make learning engaging and dynamic.

Topics covered include recognizing a text’s genre and main ideas, capturing details, making inferences, analyzing characters, understanding author’s intent, and more.

Check out the course outline:

📝 Week #1: Discovering Main Ideas

📝 Week #2: Decoding Author’s Purpose

📝 Week #3: Exploring Sequence of Events

📝 Week #4: Making Inferences

⭐ Each week, the topics discussed weave together cross-curricular concepts tailored to 3rd and 4th graders. Text selections may vary according to students' interests, ensuring an engaging learning experience.

Class Structure:

Each class, the teacher will unveil the book and topic they'll be diving into. They'll guide our young readers through the strategies we'll be using in class. Then, it's time for students to read: they will take turns reading a passage selected by the teacher, while exploring key vocabulary words that tie in perfectly with the text. Using these newfound strategies, our little learners will tackle an interactive online activity, and rest assured, personalized feedback will be given to each student at the end of every class. It's a journey through literature where every child's progress is celebrated.

We'll handpick reading passages from Foundations A-Z and Scholastic inventory, all with proper permission, licensing, and authorization from the authors.

No prior knowledge or experience is required to enroll in this course.
Learning Goals
Our learning goals will match the reading standards for the respective grade levels. Each day, students will grasp a new reading standard. Additionally, they will acquire reading strategies aimed at enhancing their comprehension skills.

**KIMBERLY**
My name is Kimberly and I teach Reading, Spanish, French, and ESL test preparation classes to K-12 and adult students. I have been teaching language classes for over 13 years in public and private schools in Canada, France, and Mexico - as well as online. I hold a B.A in French/Spanish with a minor in Linguistics, as well as a degree in Pedagogy and TESOL certificate.
What got me into teaching was a volunteer opportunity to help students learning English in my hometown, and I quickly realized how much I loved teaching and helping others develop their communication skills through language.
We'll be a great fit if you are ready to participate a lot during our lessons and try your best, while having fun and bringing a positive attitude to class. This means that you are not afraid to try new things and are willing to express your needs and ask questions during our classes. My greatest interest is developing a lesson that works best for you!

**PAULA**
My name is Paula and I teach Spanish, Reading and ESL to elementary students. In addition, I teach Spanish as a world language to middle schoolers. I have been teaching for 8 years: 3 years in Colombia and 5 years in a dual language school in North Carolina. I hold a Bachelors degree in English/French Foreign Language Teaching and I am currently pursuing a North Carolina teaching certification in Spanish Foreign Language Teaching.
My approach to teaching is student-centered, interactive and collaborative. What got me into teaching was my love for learning, which I hope to share with you.
A random fact about me is that I love plantains in any and all presentations! We’ll be a great fit if you love learning and are willing to work with me to achieve your learning goals.

**ANNA**

Hi all! I teach Elementary Math, ESL, and Reading. I have been teaching for 5 years now. I hold a Bachelor's Degree and I'm trained in the Rassias Method of teaching languages.

My approach to teaching is making sure the student knows they belong. What got me into teaching was my experience tutoring during high school. A random fact about me is I love figure skating (watching, not doing haha).

We’ll be a great fit if all parties are willing to communicate their expectations, when you don't understand something, if something comes up, etc. Feel free to ask any questions!
