Reading Comprehension and Fluency | Make Sense of Reading (Ages 8 - 11)
Students will learn and practice several reading comprehension strategies and reading fluency. (ESL students welcome!)

Class Experience
Students will enjoy a featured text excerpt both read aloud by the teacher and read by students (when comfortable). Students may bring their own copy of the book, or simply listen and follow along. Throughout the reading, students will be engaged in a series of thought provoking questions, which build their reading comprehension skills. After the selected text is read, students will practice the skills introduced in the text through fun and engaging activities which can be used with many...
Students will make connections between the text and life experiences, or other texts. Students will be able to make inferences and predictions from the text. Student will practice visualizing and making mental images. Students will be introduced to figurative language. Students will be prompted to ask questions bout what they are reading. Students will identify problems and solutions in a given text. Students will synthesize while reading a text. Students will engage in learning dialogues with teacher and peers. Students will search the text to select appropriate information when answering questions. Students will restate the meaning of the text in their own words. Students will visualize or construct meaning of the text through graphic organizers.
Activities are provided for continued learning, but no formal homework is assigned.
A PDF will be shared in the classroom on Sunday before class. If you are new to the class, or do not see the PDF, please reach out to me so I can send it to you privately! Boom Cards will be used the week of Mouse and the Motorcycle, and an additional device may be helpful in participating in this activity.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed by the teacher through observation and some written classwork. Feedback will be written and sent to parents after class concludes which will include achieved goals and suggested next steps.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
**Please Note: Students do not need to have read these titles, nor will we read the entire text for class. There will be no graphic, violent, sexual, or politically questionable excerpts included for in class lessons. We will be using carefully chosen, age-appropriate excerpts to strengthen comprehension skills, and introduce many fantastic pieces of writing to help students begin to foster a love of reading. Please review these texts in full before allowing your child full access to these texts if they choose to read more outside of class**
