Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
This is a jam packed class that teaches two top-priority comprehension skills with nonfiction and fiction text. After over 17 years of certified teaching experience and training, I am well prepared to teach these top-priority skills. We use a graphic organizer that address skills such as main idea, summarizing, character traits and inferences. We will read through a non-fiction text closely on day one. Then, we will practice the comprehension skill of the day as I model and guide students with strategies, skills, and clues to help them comprehend the text for each skill. The second class will be taught in the same way but with fiction text and a different comprehension skill. Students will receive a document that I post in the classroom for each day that will match and support them in the class for each comprehension skill.

LESSON OUTLINE
Day 1:
-Nonfiction text: read aloud together a short passage (main idea/supporting details)
-Comprehension Skill Objective: teacher explains the skill of the lesson
-Graphic Organizer: teacher uses guided reading comprehension questions as students help answer with text evidence to complete the skill focus of the class
-Share out: students get to share questions and thoughts about lesson

Day 2:
-Fiction text: read aloud together a short passage (summary/inferences)
-Graphic Organizer: teacher uses guided reading comprehension questions as students help complete text to complete the skill focus of the class
-Share out: students get to share questions and thoughts about lesson
-Practice assignment: students are encouraged to read to self at home and practice these same skills on their own
