Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This course is designed for learners to communicate on discussion boards, video diaries, drawings, or any other meaningful way they feel conveys what they are reading and how they would like to express themselves. This course will ask learners to talk about what they are reading, comment on themes and important things they got out of their reading experience, and track their progress in what they are reading in order to read as many books during the year 2025 as they would like. In the first week of class, learners will make a goal for themselves to try and follow for the year (one example I'll be using is reading 25 books for 2025). Learners can make their goals as big or small as they like, but there will be a portion of the class where we try and stay accountable to our reading goals.
Each week the class is available will have:
Monday- Reading Report- What book are you reading? Note the title, number of pages, format (e-books and audiobooks count, too!). What are you most excited about for this book (to start)/what are you predicting will happen in this week's reading. Monday is the "reset" of the week. This is also the day where learners will be tracking their reading challenge. (Book -- of --). We'll see how we progress through the weeks.
Tuesday/Wednesday- Reflection Day. The instructor will provide a prompt and a check-in message to see how learners are doing, but learners will not be responsible for anything on Tuesdays or Wednesdays officially. As well, these days the instructor will be available by message to talk more in-depth with learners, should they want to, about what they are reading, what they are finding challenging, etc.
Friday- Fact Friday- The instructor will ask learners to identify an example of a literary device (some weeks a specific one, some weeks "choosing their own" and sharing with the class) or highlight a fact about something reading related. This is designed to get learners thinking in a critical way as well as make the class a bit more academic.
END OF BOOK ASSIGNMENTS: At the end of each book, learners are encouraged to write a review of the book they just finished. These reviews can include a "star rating" (1-5), a brief description of the main points of the book (without any spoilers that would "spoil" the plot for someone else who might want to read the book), and what the learner thought of the book. Did they like the book? Did they find it boring? What shocked, surprised, or stayed with them throughout the book?
This class encourages learners to enjoy reading and think about what they are reading each week, but there will be no enforcement of finishing any books the learners do not like. There are going to be books they do not like, and that is okay! If the learners have books to read for school, those books count for the reading challenge! Reading for fun counts, and digital mediums (e-books and audiobooks) count too! These reviews can be published on a site like Goodreads with grown-up permission to encourage writing reviews and publishing thoughts effectively, but posting in the classroom will be fine as well!
The week's activities can be completed at the learners' own pace, but the daily activities will be there each week to help learners stay engaged and allow for growth and progress to be tracked.

Learning Goals

Learners will foster a love for reading as well as think about what they are reading critically.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone! My name is Abbie! I finished my master's degree in library science from Drexel University in September 2023; I also hold a BA in English and journalism from the University of Delaware; some of my favorite coursework outside of my major were classes in other forms of writing, literature, art history, performing arts, and social sciences. When I am not in class, you can find me reading anything I can get my hands on and watching LOTS of Netflix. I look forward to talking to you all more!
