Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. Learners may practice reading the decodable words and sight words that are provided on their worksheets.
Grading
Parents are welcome to inquire about their learner's progress. I can supply a short narrative of their progress including some strengths and challenges.

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
This class is based on the research of The Lindamood Bell "Seeing Stars" and "Visualize Verbalize" programs. They were designed for struggling learners who may have diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities, including dyslexia.  

This intensive beginning/intermediate reading bootcamp will be presented in live format utilizing the video and audio as we interact with each other throughout the class. Many of the exercises such as "air writing" will be performed all together in order to keep all learners engaged throughout the lesson.  All learners have many opportunities to participate and interact with both the teacher and the other learners.   Each 90 minute lesson will be divided into portions for our various skills; approximately 60 minutes for our Symbol Imagery (decoding, phonemic awareness, spelling) skills and approximately 30 minutes for our Visualizing Verbalizing reading comprehension skills.

Learning Goals

The Symbol Imagery portion of this class will target skills such as: visualizing and sequencing of sounds/letters within words.  This includes all consonants, short vowels, and various combinations for long vowels and diphthongs.
The Comprehension portion of this class will target skills such as recalling facts, stating the main idea, drawing conclusions, and making inferences.  This is done with pictures, sentences, and short passages.

 Introduction to Symbol Imagery and air writing, Practice all consonant sounds and short vowel sounds with VC (vowel consonant) words.

Introduction to Visualizing Pictures: discuss the details of a picture by noticing 12 key details.

Pre-Requisites
This class is best suited for learners who have some phonemic awareness and sight word skills, but are struggling with decoding and blending. Knowledge of most individual letter sounds will be most helpful.
Supply List
Each lesson will include 1 worksheet that will be completed during the lesson.  The worksheets will be uploaded to the classroom so that they can be printed at home.  If no printer is available, accommodations can be made.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

As a special education teacher for over 24 years, I have been using the Lindamood Bell techniques with both individuals and small groups for many years.  During my career in the classroom, my expertise has been with students who struggle with language based disabilities.  As a homeschool parent with a struggling learner, I also used these same techniques with much success.
