Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
Students will build on what was mastered in Summer Boot Camp Part I.
We will practice using the Orton Gillingham Method of syllable division using the 6 syllable types and the 4 syllable division patterns with more advanced spelling patterns, suffixes, and the three great spelling rules: drop, double, and change.

The Orton Gillingham (OG) philosophy is an instructional approach designed to help individuals with language-based learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. It is based on the understanding that ALL students benefit from explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory instruction to develop strong reading, writing, and spelling skills.

Each class, we will learn a new sound/concept to look for an identify in words, then we will practice dividing words on a (virtual) whiteboard and using physical paper. Words will be sent out after class for extra practice and days 2-5 will begin with a quick review of the correct types / patterns for 3-4 of those words.

The general scope and sequence of the days will be:
Day 1: schwa/stressed syllables
Day 2: suffixes (double and drop rule)
Day 3: y as a vowel (change)
Day 4: diphthongs oi/oy, ou/ow, au/aw
Day 5: other bossy r syllables

Note: This course assumes a student has completed Part I and can accurately identify all 6 syllable types (O, CL, ME, VT, BR and C+le) and divide words using all four syllable division patterns (VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V, V/V).
