Prerequisite: Students should be able to decode third grade text independently in order to get the most out of this class. *** Are you interested in 1:1 Reading/Spelling Tutoring? Students will be able to ask questions about these words before we continue with the lesson. Students will then read a fourth grade level text. Fourth grade reading level ranges from 740 Lexile - 940 Lexile. We will read passages at level 780L. I will ask for volunteers to read a portion of the text. If no one volunteers, I will read the text aloud and invite students to read along with me. We will discuss the text and orally answer comprehension questions through out the text. On Sundays, students will also have access to our new story/article and (4 or 8) comprehension questions. Before class, students should read and answer questions independently so class time is not the first time students are seeing the text/questions. (During class, we will not be able to answer all of the questions from the printout.) To ensure every learner has an opportunity to participate I alternate (weekly) calling on students' name in ascending to descending alphabetical order. In addition to our class meeting, I occasionally post videos, agree/disagree questions, or a short writing assignment. Participating in any of these activities are optional, but they are useful. I do not review or grade any of these activities. (Tentative) Class Schedule: (Prior to class) Learners read the week's article/story and answer comprehension questions. We will start the lesson on time! (Learners can enter 2 minutes prior to class start time.) -During the 2 minutes before class, each learner will be greeted and asked a question related to the article/story. (I am using this time to check if speakers & microphones are working.) -We will review vocabulary words. -Learners will alternate reading the article/story. -Learners will alternate answering comprehension questions. (Tentative) Class Story Titles: Aug. 24: Inventor's Luck Aug. 31: Dog's With Jobs Sep. 7: Alien Vacation Sep. 14: Lucky Socks and Winning Ways Sep. 21: No Class Sep. 28: No Class Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10 Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. PLEASE NOTE: 1) All students' will be muted to limit background noise. However, though out the lesson, students will be encouraged to read aloud and share their understandings. 2) The class is ongoing so your child can join or leave class at any time. Payment is charged each Sunday before class meets. 3) Classes will begin at the scheduled time, even if all learners are not in the classroom (unless there appears to be a technical issue). I will not contact absent learners during class time so I can focus on the learners who are present. Absent learners can view the recording to see what was missed. 4) If no learners are in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes before exiting the classroom. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Students will improve their reading skills and comprehension of fourth grade text.Students will need to be in a quiet space to encourage their participation and focus.
