Reading Adventures: Building Basic Reading Skills

Welcome to Reading Adventures: Building Basic Reading Skills.  This class is designed to introduce very beginning readers to the world of words. In this interactive and engaging class, children willl explore letters, sounds, sight words, and early reading skills, guided by a patient and enthusiastic teacher. Each week, learners will discover new skills through lively activities, games, and discussions, fostering a love for reading from the very first step. No prior knowledge or experience is needed but it would be helpful if they know some letter names and soungs.  This is a slower paced kindergarten reading sequence.  

This class does build on each lesson.  Feel free to join in at anytime and work on the skills that we have previously learned.  There will be review weeks to help learners catch up and for learners to develop more of an understanding of the letter sounds and beginning reading skills.  

We will meet 3 times a week and I will give activities to help review for the rest of the week. If at anytime we do not have 3 meetings then I will prorate that week.

Week of January 22:  Ii - letter and sound 
Week of January 29:  Tt - letter and sound 
Week of February 5:  Review letters and sounds, High Frequency words: I, Decoding - it words (sit, mit), introduce rhyming
Week of February 12: Aa - letter and sound, High Frequency words: am, Decoding -am words (Sam, Tam), and rhyming words 
Week of February 19: Bb - letter and sounds, High Frequency words: at, a, Decoding - at words (mat, sat, bat)
Week of February 26: Cc - letter and sound
Week of March 4: Ff - letter and sound 
Week of March 11: no classes 
Week of March 18: Review letters, sounds, high frequency words, decoding  
Week of March 25:  Nn - letter and sound 
Week of April 1:  Pp - letter and sound, High Frequency word: am, Decoding - am (Sam, Tam, bam)
Week of April 8: Hh - letter and sound
Week of April 15: Rr - letter and sound 
Week of April 22:  Review sounds, High Frequency words, and decoding - an
Week of April 29: Zz - letter and sound 
Week of May 6: Ee - letter and sound, High Frequency words - see, the
Week of May 13: Review letter sounds, High Frequency words, Decoding words.
