Homework Offered
In the Mindset Magicians: Unlocking the Power of Growth and the World of Words virtual class for grades K-5th, we believe in fostering a balanced approach to homework that reinforces learning, encourages independent practice, and respects the developmental needs of our young learners. Homework assignments will primarily consist of activities that reinforce the concepts covered in class. These may include reading comprehension exercises, short writing prompts, vocabulary practice, or reflection activities. The assignments will be designed to be age-appropriate and aligned with the learning objectives of the class. Homework assignments will typically be completed individually to allow students to practice and reinforce their skills independently. However, occasional group projects or collaborative tasks may be assigned to encourage teamwork and peer learning. The time required to complete homework each week will vary depending on the grade level. For grades K-2nd, homework may take approximately 15-20 minutes per week. For grades 3rd-5th, homework may take around 30-45 minutes per week. We believe in providing reasonable timeframes that allow students to complete their assignments while still having time for other extracurricular activities and family engagements. Since reading is an integral part of our class, learners will be expected to engage in independent reading outside of class time. The number of pages to be read independently will vary based on the grade level and reading ability of each student. On average, students in grades K-2nd may be expected to read 5-10 pages per week, while students in grades 3rd-5th may be assigned approximately 10-15 pages per week. The aim is to encourage a consistent reading habit and promote a love for literature. Our homework policy is designed to strike a balance between reinforcing learning, allowing for independent practice, and respecting the time constraints of our young learners and their families. We encourage open communication between parents, students, and instructors to ensure a supportive and successful learning experience.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
In the Mindset Magicians: Unlocking the Power of Growth and the World of Words virtual class for grades K-5th, we employ a comprehensive and student-centered approach to assessment. Our goal is to evaluate each learner's progress, provide constructive feedback, and celebrate their achievements while promoting a growth mindset and a love for learning. Assessment in the class is multi-faceted and includes a variety of methods to capture different aspects of a student's development. These methods may include: 1. Formative Assessments: These ongoing assessments occur during class activities, discussions, and interactive exercises. They help instructors gauge students' understanding, provide immediate feedback, and adjust instruction accordingly. 2. Reading Assessments: Regular reading assessments may be conducted to evaluate students' reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary acquisition. These assessments may include comprehension questions, reading response activities, or oral reading evaluations. 3. Writing Assessments: Writing assignments and prompts are assessed to evaluate students' ability to express their thoughts coherently, use appropriate grammar and punctuation, and showcase creativity and critical thinking skills. 4. Project-based Assessments: Occasionally, students may be assigned group or individual projects that allow them to apply their learning in a creative and meaningful way. These projects provide an opportunity to assess their understanding, research skills, and ability to present information effectively. 5. Self-assessment and Reflection: Students may be encouraged to reflect on their own learning journey, set goals, and assess their progress. This promotes self-awareness and , self-evaluation, and encourages them to take ownership of their learning. Our assessment approach is designed to be fair, supportive, and focused on growth. Feedback will be provided regularly to guide students' progress, celebrate their achievements, and identify areas for improvement. We prioritize the development of a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and continuously strive for improvement. Parents will also be kept informed of their child's progress through regular communication and progress reports. We believe in fostering a collaborative partnership between parents, students, and instructors to ensure the success of each learner in the Mindset Magicians class.
Grades Offered
The class uses a points-based grading system, where each assignment and assessment has a certain number of points assigned to it. The total points earned by the student are divided by the total points possible to calculate the percentage grade. The percentage grade is then converted to a letter grade using a standard scale (A, B, C, D, F). Grades will be provided by default for all learners, unless they opt for the pass/fail option. Grades will be updated and posted on the class website or platform after each session. Students can also request their grades from the teacher at any time. The class offers a pass/fail grading option for students who prefer not to receive a letter grade. To pass the class, students need to complete at least 80% of the assignments and assessments and achieve at least 60% of the total points. Students who choose this option need to inform the teacher before the end of the first week of the class. Grades will play an important role in this class, as they reflect the students’ progress and learning. Grades will also help the teacher and the students identify their strengths and weaknesses and adjust their instruction and practice accordingly. Grades will also motivate the students to work hard and improve their nonfiction reading and writing skills.

Parental Guidance Statement:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In today's digital age, education technology plays a significant role in shaping how our children learn and engage with their studies. As part of our commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience, we utilize various third-party tools, including Canvas, Nearpod, and Kahoot, to enhance learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. We understand that you may have questions or concerns about these tools, so we've provided this guidance to help you better understand their purpose and how they are used in your child's education.

1. **Canvas**: Canvas is a learning management system that allows students to access course materials, submit assignments, communicate with teachers, and participate in discussions. It provides a centralized platform for organizing and managing educational resources, assignments, and grades. Through Canvas, students can engage with multimedia content, collaborate with their peers, and receive timely feedback from their teachers. Parents can also create observer accounts to monitor their child's progress and stay informed about upcoming assignments and announcements.

2. **Nearpod**: Nearpod is an interactive presentation and assessment tool that enables teachers to create engaging multimedia lessons and deliver them directly to students' devices. With Nearpod, teachers can incorporate interactive activities such as polls, quizzes, virtual reality experiences, and collaborative discussions to enhance student participation and understanding. Parents may see their child using Nearpod to complete assignments, participate in class discussions, or review lesson materials at home. Nearpod provides valuable insights into student engagement and comprehension, allowing teachers to tailor instruction to meet individual learning needs.

3. **Kahoot**: Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that transforms traditional quizzes and assessments into interactive, competitive activities. Teachers can create custom quizzes or choose from a library of pre-made games covering various subjects and topics. Students compete against their classmates to answer questions correctly and earn points, fostering a fun and engaging learning environment. Kahoot encourages active participation, critical thinking, and teamwork, making learning enjoyable and memorable for students. Parents may notice their child using Kahoot to review concepts, reinforce learning, or assess their understanding of course material.

While these tools offer many benefits for enhancing student learning and engagement, we understand the importance of ensuring their safe and responsible use. We take privacy and security seriously and adhere to strict guidelines to protect students' personal information and online safety. Our teachers receive training on how to effectively integrate these tools into their instruction while promoting responsible digital citizenship among students.

As parents/guardians, we encourage you to stay involved in your child's educational journey by asking questions, exploring these tools together, and staying informed about how they are being used in the classroom. We welcome open communication and feedback to ensure that we continue to provide a positive and enriching learning experience for all students.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in education.
