Beginner Level
Students will learn to identify key concepts and words in each sentence, take accurate notes, and speak and write from these notes. As a bonus, to work on listening and following directions, the class will conclude with how to draw the animal. If you are familiar with IEW, you know that to start, students must understand how to take effective notes and how to write from their notes, not just to be successful in class, but with all writing. This class is a beginner class. Some learners need more practice than others with these foundational units. For example, an elementary school student will likely need to practice this new skill many times. In this ongoing class, students will learn how to create a 'Key Word Outline' from a short paragraph about an animal and how to use it to retell or speak it aloud. Students are welcome to take this class as often as they would like. If you are considering choosing another class with me, this is a great place to start to see if we are a good fit. My classes are fairly structured, with a lot of student input. I aim to help them create their own notes that make sense to them. This is an essential skill that can be carried into every other area of education. The faster and more accurately they take notes, the more they will retain and understand. Students do not need any prior knowledge to take this class, but they should be able to read at least at a second-grade level. The source paragraphs given in class should be easy for them to read. The more times they practice this outline, the more proficient they will become. Each class will feature one animal and one easy drawing lesson. The animals will change depending on student suggestions!
Learning Goals
The learner will create an outline of meaningful words from the source text.
The learner will form sentences using the outline only. This will be practiced as an oral "speech".
Other Details
Learning Needs
As an experienced educator, Mrs. Bodine can support the learning needs of each student.
Parental Guidance
Shortly before class (usually the day before), I will post a pdf page with a short paragraph about an animal. It's best to print this out for class. There is no need to do any work prior to this.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to read a short paragraph, write on paper, and be willing to try drawing as I model and instruct.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Social Studies/History
I have been teaching dynamic lessons in the classroom for more than 20 years. After earning a Master's Degree in Education, I raised three daughters and am a licensed teacher in a classical school. I teach Latin, history, grammar, language arts, math, and science to elementary-age children. I also maintain registration from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) to teach writing. My goal is to instill a love of learning in every child and to engage them in active learning. A fun fact about me is I have also taught in China and Romania. Another fun fact is that Mrs. Jennifer Crowe, a very popular teacher on Outschool, is my long-time friend and is the reason I am on Outschool!
