Read, Write, and Draw... a Gecko Lizard (Repeatedly) IEW Outline
In this stand-alone class, we will read about the Gecko, find meaningful keywords to create an outline, discuss it, and draw the lizard. This is a great one-time class, or it can be repeated when I focus on a different animal! IEW Unit 1A
Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 4
Beginner Level
Follows Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) Curriculum
Students will learn to identify key concepts and words in each sentence, take accurate notes, and speak and write from these notes. As a bonus, to work on listening and following directions, the class will conclude with how to draw the animal. If you are familiar with IEW, you know that to start, students must understand how to take effective notes and how to write from their notes, not just to be successful in class, but with all writing. This class is a beginner class. Some learners need...
- The learner will create an outline of meaningful words from the source text.
- The learner will form sentences using the outline only. This will be practiced as an oral "speech".
- The learner will draw a picture based on modeling and step-by-step instructions.

As an experienced educator, Mrs. Bodine can support the learning needs of each student.
Students should be able to read a short paragraph, write on paper, and be willing to try drawing as I model and instruct.
Print out the pdf which I will send you the day before the class. You will need a piece of lined paper for your outline. You will need a piece of plain white paper for the drawing and a pencil, of course!
Shortly before class (usually the day before), I will post a pdf page with a short paragraph about an animal. It's best to print this out for class. There is no need to do any work prior to this.
