Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Advanced Level
In this 6 week class, learners will continue to reinforce their skills in reading & spelling as they become more familiar with advanced English language phonics skills including several long vowel spelling patterns. We will begin each class with a review of previously learned material by reading a short passage or list of familiar words or playing a phonemic awareness game. We will then learn the new concept or spelling pattern and spend time practicing how to identify it and read it, and then reinforce our understanding by spelling it and using it in sentences. We will then work on reading a small passage or text that contains the new pattern. In addition to the vowel spelling patterns, we will also practice the consonant diagraphs and blends throughout all of our lessons. Comprehension skills and vocabulary development will be woven into every lesson. I will use a variety of activities to teach, including some video or slide show presentations, games, word ladders and worksheets containing several reading and writing activities.

Our schedule is as follows (may be slightly adjusted according to learners' needs):
Week 1: Magic e (cane, take, date, joke)
Week 2: Double ee (sheet, seen, deep)
Week 3: Long a spelled two ways - ay and ai (day, ray, stay and rain, chain, tail)
Week 4: Long i spelled with y at the end of a short word (fly, try, shy, my)
Week 5: Long o spelled two ways - oa and ow (boat, goal, show, row)
Week 6: spooky oo (boot, hoot, moon, shoot)
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their reading fluency and spelling skills as they learn and practice several long vowel spelling patterns as well as continued practice with short vowels, diagraphs, and blends.
