Read Like a Ninja: Developing Beginning Reading Skills

In this one-time class, beginning readers will read together a short ninja story from which students will analyze features of a sentence, recognize and produce rhyming words, consonant blends, and single syllable words.   

First, students will listen to the teacher read the story, and they will use their ninja “chops” to show that they hear words that rhyme.  Next, the teacher will make a list with the class of the rhyming words that they heard and point out the consonant blends and digraphs.This list will be used for students to “punch out” the number of syllables and create words with the same number of syllables that rhyme. Finally, students will do a choral reading as a class, adding ninja moves to match the story line. Expect your learner to be actively learning, they will be out of their seats at times, and may be loud. This is a great class for students that are full of energy, reading, or have an interest in learning to read.
