TEACHING METHOD Many older readers still struggle to decode multisyllabic words - hindering fluency and comprehension as readings in school become longer and more complex. Multisyllabic word study is suited for: -ADVANCED early second graders - on pace 3rd-4th graders -struggling 5th graders Science of Reading research (Ehri, Kilpatrick) shows that orthographically mapping word parts (morpheme chunks) helps with reading automaticity. Readers are then able to segment and decode multisyllabic words easily rather than sounding out letters and blends. This can be especially helpful for dyslexic readers. This class uses the gradual release method (I do, we do, you do) and encourages students to participate during class. To be successful, students should: - Be able to read basic words/be at least at a middle second grade reading level (be able to read blends (BL), long vowel sounds, vowel teams) -Be able to mute and unmute their mic independently -Bring a whiteboard/black marker to class Not only will students simply learn to READ/DECODE multisyllabic words, but learners will also work toward being able to spell, learn meanings, and comprehend passages using these words. Sample words: fraction, microscope, committed, genetically, triceratops, structure, influence STRATEGIES Big words can cause students to panic! Here are the strategies that we work on together to help students decipher big words! 1. Spot "hidden" words that you know! 2. Spot prefixes, suffixes, roots 3. Adjust Sounds (soft vs. hard sounds) 4. One bite at a time and put it all together 5. Use logic (what do you already know?) CLASS STRUCTURE Class 1: 1. Welcome and Warmup 2.
