Class Experience

"The Wonky Donkey" is a delightful children's book and song that uses rhyming, rhythmic, and repetitive language to talk about a donkey walking down the road. It's written by Craig Smith with illustrations by Katz Cowley and is published by Scholastic. The students will be able to see the book in class and I'll have a Google slides presentation to help them follow the lesson.

- I'll read the book and lead the students to discuss the story and illustrations.
- We'll discuss adjectives and how they are used to describe the donkey.
- We'll find the rhyming words within the story and learn their definitions.
- I'll lead a discussion about how some of the words are fine to use when talking about a thing or an animal but would not be appropriate to use about a person. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk about being kind to others with our words and actions.
- We'll discuss how this is a cumulative story - it starts with a simple sentence and keeps adding adjectives to make it longer and longer.
- I'll teach them the song and we'll learn about rhythm, singing vs. speaking, and even learn some movements to go with the song.
- Finally, we'll finish class by singing with the video that has an animation of the story.

This is a 1 time 40-minute class for ages 4-8. I do have permission from the author to use the song and video listed under resources.
