During this class, I will read How to Catch a Unicorn about a unicorn who visits his animal friends at the zoo. We will discuss the types of traps the children in the story use to try to capture the unicorn, and why they did not work. Next, students will get to design their own unicorn traps on paper. Together, students will brainstorm some ideas of items and materials that could be used to help capture a unicorn, then students will develop their trap and explain how it will work to their peers. Extension idea for families: After class, it could be fun for students to actually try to build a small version of their trap, using everyday household items, such as toilet paper rolls, bowls, string, tape, etc. This would be very similar to creating a leprechaun trap. How much fun would this be?!! :)
*Students will engineer a device to trap a unicorn
*Students will use critical thinking skills
*Students will improve their listening and communication skills*Piece of plain paper *Pencil and eraser *Positive attitude and open mind for being creative :)
When I read the "fart glitter" and "unicorn farts" phrases, I will giggle, but not allow students to dwell and get inappropriate. I am skilled at redirecting focus and guiding discussions in positive directions.
