What will be taught?

While the main goal of this class is to provide an environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions, I will also be teaching about puppy care.

What topics will be covered?

The topics that will be covered are feeding/watering puppies, brushing them, socializing them, how to properly hold them, what to do when they bite little fingers, cleaning up after puppies, and how to help adults care for them.

How is this class structured?

My class is structured in a way that allows the students to feel that they have some control over their learning. They will be learning all about puppies in a fun environment. Studies show that students learn and retain more information when they take part in active learning. It is because of this, that I structure my classes using an active learning approach. If students are enjoying the class, they are more likely to remember it and the information I’m presenting.

We will first start with introductions and then I will introduce the puppies. Each student will be given a chance to ask a question about the puppies and our discussion will be student led, while teacher supervised. We will discuss caring for puppies and I will be asking students questions on how they might care for their animals or help out at home. Towards the end of class, students will be offered the chance to introduce their pet and talk a bit about him/her.

How will you teach?

In this class, I will use inquiry–based learning. Inquiry based learning allows the students to be at the center of the class. Instead of me, feeding them information and drilling it into them, I will be triggering their curiosity. This allows their learning to continue even after class by helping them become more motivated to learn.

How much will learners get to interact with the teacher and other students?

The main goal of this class is for learners to interact with their peers and the teacher while discussing a topic that is fun and happy in nature. My class is structured in a way that allows learners to be unmuted during the entire class time (as long as there is minimal background noise). All learners will get a chance to ask questions and virtually meet my 10 puppies!

My family and I have been breeding dogs for over eight years. My children were very young when we started, and it was imperative to make sure they knew how to properly care for the puppies and put safety at the forefront. Instead of drilling information into them on how to care for the puppies, I would present the information in a fun and engaging way. This allowed for them to want to help in taking care of the puppies.
