Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Participants (ages 10-14) in this fun and interactive 3-day public speaking workshop will learn how to prepare an outline for a speech, practice public speaking and conversation skills, and provide one another with positive feedback. Each student will prepare short speeches and discover positive ways their words motivate and encourage others.

DAY 1 - ON YOUR MARK: Introduction / Creating an Outline
Each participant will create an outline for an "All About Me" speech. The speech will be 1- to 4-minutes long. Participants will also introduce themselves and practice conversation skills.

NOTE: A SPEECH OUTLINE for this workshop is typically about 8 sentences; however, they can add details to enhance their speeches. A copy of an outline is provided to participants.

DAY 2 - GET SET: Speech Practice and Feedback
Students will share their "All About Me" speeches with one another. They will practice public speaking skills and receive positive feedback from one another and the teacher.

Students will also identify a story from their own lives to create an "I Have a Voice" motivational speech to (1) explain how they faced a personal challenge and (2) share at least 3 tips for others who may face a similar challenge.

Challenges can include but are not limited to:
* Moving to a new city, state, or country.
* Attending a new school.
* Learning a new language.
* Learning a new skill such as a sport, musical instrument, art, dance, acting, etc.
* Bravely saying something you felt scared to express.
* Doing something you believed was the right thing to do.

DAY 3 - GO! Share Your Voice
Participants will share "I Have a Voice" speeches with one another. They will (1) describe personal stories about a challenge they faced, (2) use appropriate volume, vocal variety, tempo, eye contact, and gestures as they deliver their speeches, (3) describe at least 3 suggestions others can use if they experience a similar challenge, and (4) provide a conclusion at the end of their speech. Students will receive positive feedback and encouragement from one another and the instructor.

Participants will also have opportunities to practice impromptu speaking and improvisation skills. An impromptu speech requires little to no preparation. It is a fun way to sharpen speaking and listening skills.

Parental Guidance
The creation of this 3-day public speaking workshop was inspired by my public speaking students who love to speak in front of others. They want to sharpen their public speaking skills and are hungry for opportunities to showcase their skills. I created a speech outline and tools for participants that will help them organize a speech. Many participants discover public speaking courage they did not know was within them. The only way to strengthen public speaking confidence is to practice public speaking. I create a safe, encouraging environment for pre-teens and teens to strengthen their public speaking skills.
Pre-Requisites
Participants should have knowledge of the English language as well as basic English speaking and writing skills. Prior public speaking experience is not required to participate in this public speaking class.
Supply List
Student speakers are encouraged to bring a writing utensil (pen, pencil, or computer for taking notes and editing outline), paper or notebook, and copies of the "All About Me" and "I Have a Voice" outlines provided with this class.
