US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Students in this class will strengthen their public speaking confidence by (1) practicing public speaking skills such as volume, tempo, and eye contact, (2) preparing a speech using an outline, and (3) participating in conversation. Through conversation, students become comfortable with one another in a safe, positive environment. Speeches are typically 1 - 4 minutes long. Students develop an outline for delivering presentations. I provide students with an outline before every speech via Outschool email. Great speakers are prepared speakers. Their speeches always include (1) a clear introduction, (2) main points that support a topic, and (3) a conclusion with a call to action. Each speech provides students with opportunities to practice different speaking skills: Speech #1: "All About Me" Speech / Create an Outline Speech #2: Storytelling Speech / Speak with Expression Speech #3: Demonstration Speech / Use Words to Explain a Task Speech #4: Storytelling / Vocal Variety Speech #5: Report / Using Facts to Support Your Topic or Opinion Speech #6: Debate Skills / Using Facts to Support Your Position Speech #7: Motivational Speaking / Storytelling & Inspiration Speech #8: Impromptu Speaking / Imagination & Acting Skills Speech #9: Persuasion / Using Words to Influence Others Speech #10: SMART Goals / Using a Process to Pursue a Goal As students practice public speaking skills, they receive positive feedback and encouragement to boost their speaking confidence. This class runs in 10-week cycles. It is not necessary for students to attend these classes in order. Students may also take this class more than one time to practice different types of speeches and public speaking skills. *** NOTE: This class is not designed to assist students with speech-related disorders. I am a certified public speaking and theater teacher with 30+ years of experience as a professional speaker, public speaking coach, and contest judge, but I do not have speech pathology certification or background. *** If your child enrolls in this class after the "start" date, you may want your child to attend my one-session class, "Create an Awesome OUTLINE for a Speech, Presentation, or Report." The outline is a tool students use every week to prepare a speech. Visit this link: https://outschool.com/classes/create-an-awesome-outline-for-a-speech-presentation-or-report-a4nGoqYP?usid=yI7TFiPK&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link. This ongoing course provides novice speakers with opportunities to gain confidence as they practice new skills and receive encouragement. Experienced speakers will have opportunities to receive evaluative feedback to sharpen their public speaking skills. I hope to meet your child in our online classroom! Please contact me if you have any questions.
