Class Experience

For today’s young creative visual artists, knowledge of digital art and animation processes are a must. If you are an artist that is passionate about video gaming design, compelling character concept portraits, anime, fantasy landscapes, board game art and other entertainment sources that use intricate digitalized images, then this Camp is for you!

In 4-week camp, we will be using Procreate in a fun and collaborative way to build a few art projects that can be tailored to the interests of individual learners. Students will learn new tools and techniques to execute on their visions and bring them to life, and will be able to utilize those tools in their future art projects away from class.

Though Procreate is a very intuitive and powerful app, the variety of tools and functions within can be overwhelming. As such, we will be introducing and utilizing Procreate’s functions piece by piece each week, allowing students to digest the tools and techniques at their own pace. Over the course of the camp, they will gain a thorough understanding of how to use layers, clipping masks, selection tools, grids, brush libraries, blurs, light blooms, and more, as well as a variety of techniques relating to line art, shading, and color theory.

Day 1. Create your own character

    • Learn the process of taking a character from sketch to line art to color
    • Use light and shadow and special effects to bring realism to the character
    • Explore different textures and custom brushes for hair, fabric, and other materials

Day 2. Landscape or cityscape

    • Choose perspective, horizon lines and vanishing points
    • Use layers, blends and blurs to make our environment realistic
    • Learn to use ambient lighting for greater realism
    • See how to merge files to place our Day 1 character within our new environment

Day 3. Realistic portrait to stylized 2d avatar

    • Import photograph into Procreate to adapt to a stylized character (Students can also adapt their character from week 1 if they like)
    • Learn to analyze shapes and spacing for acurate caricatures
    • Use clipping masks and layer masks to create a stylish cel-shaded look
    • Finish class with an an avatar portrait that can be used for user and character profiles

Day 4. Animating simple characters and objects

    • Create simple characters (possibly based on Day 1 character) that can be easily animated
    • Learn to use Animation Assist to use our layers as animation frames
    • Use professional animation techniques to apply believable physics to our character's movements

Parents should be aware that Procreate needs to be purchased in advance of the class for $12.99 and can only be currently used on iOS. While it is possible to use your fingers on Procreate, it is highly recommended to have an Apple Pencil or other pressure-sensitive stylus that can be used with your Apple device.
Learning Goals
Students will complete 2-3 art projects through their camp that will be unique to each individual, after being provided some base criteria at the outset. They will be taught to utilize tools for creating realistic light and shadow, organize their layers, colors, and brushes, and best practices for art workflows.

As students are meant to have a great deal of input into their designs for this camp, we will also be talking through some ways to exercise our imaginations in ways that will bear fruit artistically.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a degree in animation and over twenty years of experience not only teaching art but also as a professional artist, working on everything from Dungeons & Dragons illustrations to kids board game designs to UX design for large-scale corporate applications. I love what I do, so it seldom feels like work to me, and it feels great to be able to help lay the foundation for that kind of relationship with art in others.
