Probability Camp: Math Fun with Coins, Candy, Cards, and Dice

In this four-day class, students will explore probably in a hands-on, group setting. With discovery learning, students will begin to use fractions, percents, and ratios to express probability. They will show their outcomes graphically.

What's included

4 live meetings
2 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each week students will have the opportunity to complete an optional worksheet on the type of probability we discovered in class. They can also upload a picture of their graph for the class to see.
Assessment
At the end of the class, students will be able to complete a Kahoot based on what they have learned in class. This will be a "challenge" Kahoot which will be completed individually outside of class. The Kahoot will provide an informal assessment of learning.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Students will be introduced to probability through exploration. Each week we will use different manipulatives from everyday life to learn about probability. Students will learn to express probability using fractions, percentages, ratios, and graphs. Each week we will use a different type of graph to represent what we have learned.

During class, each student will participate by flipping a coin, rolling the dice, etc. Before they begin, they will hypothesize about the results they expect. After completing the task, each student will share their results with the class. We will compile the results and make comparisons between the results of each individual and the results of the whole class. We will then look at the mathematical probability of each event and discuss how it compares to the results we found. After class, students will have the option of completing a worksheet to apply what they have learned. They can also upload the graphs they have made to share with the class.

Here is a list of the manipulative we will explore:
Day 1: Flipping coins
Day 2: Rolling dice
Day 3: Random choice from a bag (we use candy)
Day 4: Deck of cards

Learning Goals

Students will learn the meaning of probability. They will be able to calculate the probability of different events and represent it in different ways. They will learn to collect data and represent data in different ways. The will understand the importance of the work of an individual as well as the work of a group.

Supply List
Every week students need paper, crayons or colored pencils, and a ruler. In addition, each week students will need the following:
Day 1: 5 coins
Day 2: A pair of dice
Day 3: A package of Skittles (2.17 ounces)
Day 4: A deck of playing cards
Language of Instruction
English
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Kahoot
Sources
At the end of the course, students will be able to complete a Kahoot based on what they have learned in class. This requires access to https://kahoot.it/. It is not required and students do not need to use their names to play.

I have been teaching since I began tutoring children when I was in high school. My strength is in the “explaining.” I am a certified math teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience in public, private, and homeschool settings, as well as one-on-one tutoring. I have a BS in Mathematics Education and a MS in Educational Technology and Online Learning. I have six years experience teaching math online. Many students have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in mathematics, but they need help recognizing when to use each skill. My goal is to give students strategies to help them identify the type of skill they need to successfully complete unique problems. I want to see them smile when they realize they “got it.”My husband has stuck by my side for 30 years and we have three wonderful adult children. I love students and teaching and look forward to meeting your child.
