Class Experience
US Grade 10 - 12
In this class, I strive to make students feel more comfortable and confident in writing an essay by demonstrating the process as a series of steps rather than one exasperating writing assignment. One area in particular we will focus on is knowing where to begin and clearly identifying the main idea. I will also provide techniques, strategies, and examples to foster an overall understanding of an essay and how to construct one. We will then talk about the process of brainstorming, the importance of an outline, and various devices to ensure our work makes an impact. Points to be emphasized include: Identifying an argument, point, or theme; Brainstorming; Creating an outline: Supporting your work with credible evidence; and Asking questions throughout the process. Throughout this class, students will have the opportunity to write their own essay which we will discuss at length. Our discussions and their efforts will result in a better understanding, increased level of confidence, and improved ability as they begin to realize their own writing skills and the impact they can make through their written work. As this is an inclusive space, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.
Learning Goals
Students will have a better understanding of an essay, its role in improving our knowledge, and techniques to write one.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults within the educational and mental health systems. While in graduate school, I was a part-time college instructor which ignited my passion for teaching. I then became a mental health therapist, working in residential facilities as well as in the community. For the past six years, I have taught students online, which has been rewarding and challenging in ways that continue to inspire me.
Along with being a teacher, I am also a writer. I have had two short stories published, and I continue to regularly submit material. For three years, I had a blog that included my short stories, reviews, and opinions on various issues. Other examples of my writing experience consist of curriculums for an independent living program, program descriptions, numerous website articles, as well as online advertisements. I enjoy sharing my passion for writing with students and hearing about what inspires them. I strive to provide a supportive atmosphere for my students, allowing them to harness and express their creativity in ways unique to them.
Throughout my educational and professional careers, I have implemented various tools in my own life to create and maintain a system of learning, organization, and balance. After successes and failures alike, I now believe the knowledge of "how to learn" is a skill that serves us well after we graduate from school. I enjoy sharing these valuable skills with students who may discover a new way to be productive, feel confident as they plan for their future, and apply them to different parts of their lives for the rest of their lives.
