Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 4
This class is an assessment and meet & greet. During the first class, I will be assessing your learner. I will be using a TEACHER'S COLLEGE writing assessment in order to assess skills such as writing organization, development, elaboration, craft, development of leads and conclusions, editing, and spelling conventions. During this first meeting, I will also be assessing your child's learning style so that I can plan future lessons to best meet their needs. I will also use this session to get to know your child and his or her interests. I will then be able to recommend the appropriate writing learning plan that will best suit your child. During our tutoring sessions, I will be using Lucy Caukin's Teacher's College curriculum plan in order to help beginning and proficient writers produce well-organized and well-crafted writing pieces. We will learn to write narrative, informational, and opinion pieces. Learners will be carefully guided through the entire writing process and lessons will be differentiated and tailored to your learner's needs. I have listed the goals for the various writing pieces that we will work on together, however, my number one goal is to instil a love for writing and build confident writers! Writing goals for narrative writing include: - Pre-writing: brainstorming - Organizing our story so that it includes a beginning, middle, and end. - Writing a hook and creating an ending. - Forming characters and including their actions, feelings, and thoughts. - Using a plot diagram. - Describing the setting. - Using sentence starters and transitions. - Using precise language. - Editing and using a self-editing checklist. Writing goals for informational writing include: - Pre-Writing: choosing a topic and narrowing it to a seed idea. - Pre-Writing: choosing 3 subtopics. - Researching. - Citing. - Note-taking. - Paraphrasing. - Paragraph writing. - Writing an introduction with a lead. - Writing a body that includes a topic sentence, closing sentence, and facts about the claim. - Writing a conclusion. -Using a thesaurus. - Editing and using a self-editing checklist. Writing goals for opinion writing: - Pre-Writing: Choosing a topic and opinion. - Pre-Writing: Choosing 3 subtopics. - Researching. - Citing. - Note-taking. - Paraphrasing. - Paragraph writing. - Writing an introduction with a lead and claim. - Writing a body that includes a topic sentence, closing sentence, and facts about the claim. - Writing a conclusion with a closing statement. - Using a thesaurus. - Editing and using a self-editing checklist.

Teacher expertise and credentials
New York Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi, I’m Sarah, and I’m passionate about helping children become confident, successful readers.
With over a decade of experience in education, including teaching dual-language kindergarten and running my own tutoring business, I specialize in providing personalized, explicit phonics instruction to emergent and struggling readers.
My journey began when I noticed a lack of accessible and practical curriculums tailored to meet the needs of diverse learners. This inspired me to create my own, blending foundational literacy with engaging, research-based techniques. Since then, I’ve worked with students from Kindergarten through 5th grade, helping them master everything from phonics and fluency to comprehension and vocabulary development.
I believe that every child learns differently, which is why I design individualized lesson plans based on assessments and ongoing progress monitoring. My data-driven approach ensures that every session meets your child where they are and takes them where they need to go.
When I’m not teaching, I love spending time with my family and my little one and exploring creative ways to make learning fun. Whether your child is just starting out or needs extra support to thrive, I’m here to help them build a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.
Let’s work together to unlock your child’s reading potential!
