Class Experience

These classes are designed for absolute beginner level Spanish students to students who have already been learning Spanish for some time.

Lessons and topics will be created based off of your child's interests and homework will be provided weekly in order for your child to review and practice vocabulary and/or concepts. Videos will also be provided to parents to review and share with students for vocabulary listening exercises (videos may also be sent directly to students, if parents prefer). Videos are reviewed by teacher ahead of time for content-ie., polite language, appropriateness for class, suitability for different ages, etc. (if you have any specific concerns or preferences on video content, please let me know ahead of time). If not already specified prior to our first class, I will assess your child's skills in the first class and will ask them what they are most interested in learning about and/or studying.

**Parents may also make specific requests for content (specific vocabulary that will be useful if visiting a particular Spanish-speaking area soon, practicing certain grammar concepts, etc.).

Lessons, presentations and homework are designed and created specifically for your child each week, so topics may be changed at any time! Although, 2-3 weeks advance notice is recommended. If we are learning and practicing a specific grammar concept, it may be more challenging for your child if we are starting over with new vocabulary. However, the goal is to help your child see why THEY want to learn Spanish, so it is important that they are learning about something that they are truly interested in and want to learn about!

I prefer to teach using an immersive style, having learned languages best that way, myself. However, this can stressful for some students, so I am happy to teach in a way that is best suited for your child! Classes may be taught entirely in Spanish, mainly in Spanish, or with a balance of Spanish and English, depending on the learner's needs.

We will be learning vocabulary (along with grammar concepts) with a focus on visual and auditory learning, with some reading (if your child has not yet learned to read or is just learning to read, we will not focus on reading. Reading, however, will still be included in order for your child to become familiar with the letters and sounds of Spanish.

We will also play games and I will do my best to incorporate your child's interests into our classes to make the experience more enjoyable and more fun!
Learning Goals
This depends on the parents' and students' goals. For those who would like their children to have a good understanding of Spanish and have the ability to speak Spanish well within a year or two, it will be necessary to assist your child outside of class (practicing and reviewing vocabulary with your child, completing optional homework provided, watching tv/movies in Spanish and/or listening to stories in Spanish, rewatching classes, etc.). For those who simply would like to introduce their children to Spanish and help them get started, we will focus on learning vocabulary and basic grammar, but there will not be as much of a focus of attaining goals--simply having fun (but learning in the process).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Language from Northern Illinois University
I have a Bachelor's Degreee in Spanish Language & Literature and in previous jobs, I communicated with individuals in Spanish on a daily basis. I studied Spanish in high school and college and struggled to understand or speak Spanish (although I could do the written work just fine), until I studied abroad for a semester in Spain. It was there that I began to see the benefit of immersive learning and using the language constantly (repetition) in order to learn the language well.
