Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
This class follows a systematic phonics-based approach. Students will learn to read with live online support. While studying the Alphabetic Principle students build decoding, fluency, and spelling skills. We will read original illustrated decodable stories. We will learn spelling rules and play games to maintain an engaging online learning experience.

Students of all ages who have struggled with reading are welcome.
Students should be familiar with the short-vowel and consonant letter sounds.
We will complete a reading skills check during our first session to determine the best place to start in the phonics review.
Once enrolled, students will have complete access to the Viva Phonics resources for practice at home.

We will begin our reading journey with a brief review of the letter sounds, read two-letter blends, 3-letter words and then continue on to more complex patterns. The journey to becoming a strong reader will take time and work.

One-on-one sessions or small group classes allow each student time to practice reading and it gives us the opportunity to provide immediate corrective feedback. These two practices are crucial for struggling learners. Frequency is also important, so we meet at minimum three times per week.

Angelica and a small team of tutors provide one-on-one and small group instruction for emerging and struggling readers.

We have a robust online reading curriculum and have been serving families for over 5 years!

Viva Phonics uses a structured literacy approach to help struggling readers achieve reading success. Each phonics lesson is strategically designed to help your struggling reader master new skills and gain confidence in their reading ability.

Readers start by increasing their understanding of letter-sound relationships. This is key to helping students recognize familiar words and decode new words. The ability to decode helps readers grasp new vocabulary and apply new terms correctly.

Readers gradually build reading fluency through repetition, practice and drills. This new ability to read words quickly, accurately and with expression will improve a student's comprehension skills, increasing his appetite for reading and devouring all things words.

Then, readers develop a rock-solid foundation in spelling through dictation exercises – an integral part of reading – by practicing the speech sounds verbally, and spelling those speech sounds accurately. A strong speller is a strong reader and writer!
