Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Each year, the lessons start at the student’s current level and we develop new concepts together. These will be notation, technique advancement, and musical expression, with all other required skills for examinations if the student is preparing for exams. Students are invited to choose music pieces and styles they are most familiar with, or choose the List pieces for examinations. The goal is to train the student in overall musicianship whether for examinations or personal enjoyment. I use method books at certain phases.

Skills your child will learn include:
Pre-Beginner: Hand movements, reading notation, enjoying music, and creating and learning tunes. Hands separately, then Hands together, one-octave scales, and introduction to the metronome. Introduction to memorization.

Beginner: Hands together, favorite songs, musical terminology, scales and triads, chords, arpeggios, repertoire, etudes, and technique. Articulation and interpretation begin. Exam preparation.

Intermediate: Precision, Polish, Preparation for examinations, or advanced popular music.
Ear Tests: Clap back, playbacks, and identification skills. Sight Reading or improvisation for popular track.

And more . . .
I help the students include a well-rounded group of genres to further their performance abilities. In Beginner lessons, we work at strong foundations through fun and humor. For Intermediate lessons, we begin cultivating a personal style for the young musician. At the next level, we polish any techniques, interpretation, or expression that needs improvement.

I divide the lessons to include three areas: 1) Repertoire and style, 2) Skillful technique, and 3) Performance and memorization.

Theory:
Theory lessons are available and are taught separately. However, while the student is learning, there is a lot of theory learning that "happens". This is reinforced through the theory lessons.

Students are expected to practice daily, 15 minutes a day in the lower grades, and increasingly more throughout the advanced levels. While you learn challenging skills in the lessons, my vision is to have every student look forward to showing how far they have progressed each week.
Learning Goals
Playing piano, using notation, sight reading, and interpretation, with a broad selection of genres, and preparing for the next grade level or exams. Alternatively, enjoying music.

Learning Needs
Since studies show that Piano Lessons help with Math, Reading, and Language skills, and enhance executive function, I adapt lessons for learners with ADHD, Emotional Dysregulation, and Impulsivity.
Pre-Requisites
Children can begin lessons at age 8. They should understand basic reading and follow simple instructions. Due to the class time, of 50 minutes, several breaks are worked into the lesson for movement as younger students may require.
Supply List
Music books and sheet music will be purchased by the parents before the season starts or at least by the third lesson.
Learners should have a full-sized keyboard, preferably a piano or digital piano, with full-sized keys, weighted and touch-sensitive.
An acoustic piano is ideal.
For the class, students each need a computer with video for the Zoom format.
