Class experience

Our private weekly live meetings can include these learning goals:

Through our live conversations and discussions, your teen will learn what it means to be honest, to have integrity, to take responsibility

Goalsetting:
Your teen will learn to dream big, brainstorm possibilities and believe in their (near) infinite potential. Then they will learn to set realistic SMART goals that still stretch their abilities, break them down in manageable chunks and then into daily tasks that can be worked on, acted on, tracked and achieved one by one over time.
They learn to celebrate every small success so motivation builds and at the same time reflect on challenges and learn from them how to improve the outcome next time.
In the process they will learn list-building and prioritizing combined with proper time management, which re habits that all highly successful people employ.
We will develop a vision board and/or create anchor Images to visualize their goals.

Developing Positive Habits:
Your teen will learn how to create and maintain healthy daily habits that will make achieving their goals more likely.

Goals and Habits will evolve around the 5 main determinants of Health:
>> Physical Health (Healthy Body)
>> Mental Health (Healthy Mind)
>> Spiritual Health (Values, Purpose, Connection to a higher purpose)
>> Social Health (Relationships, Connection with past and future generations)
>> Financial Health (How to manage money)
We will develop a learning plan to create, break down, track and over time achieve those goals.

Book Club:
We will together choose timeless books that will support their goals (e.g. Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People" and Books about classic philosophy) and we will talk about the principles from these books and if and how the student will apply them in their own life, including becoming more optimistic, positive (but realistic) thinking and learning from life's unavoidable obstacles, creating and maintaining good relationships, rethinking values and morals and using our brain and reasoning skills (pre-frontal cortex) to make better decisions, leading to better actions and a better life overall.

Becoming a Mature Person:
We will discuss life's most discussed and important questions that have relevance for teenagers, like:
How can I live a good life?
What is the purpose of my life?
What do I want to achieve?
How do I want to live in 10,20 years?
What is most important to me at this time and how may this change in the future?
What does "living a good life" mean to me?
How will I go about learning what I want and need to learn?
How can I change the things worth changing, accept the things that I cannot change (and learn to tell the difference)?
What does it mean to be part of my culture, be part of society, part of this world?
What are problems that I face, that my family and friends face, that my society faces, that the world faces?
How did previous generations attack and solve these problems?
What can I learn in our modern time from the great minds of the past to create a better future for tomorrow?
How can I contribute in a meaningful way?
How can I respect myself as well as others?
What are good ways of coming to a decision?
How to be empathetic, kind and friendly without being a "pushover"
How can I set proper boundaries?
How can I recognize, evaluate and seize opportunities that open up?
When is it better to say "No" and walk away?

Conflict Resolution and Communication Techniques
We learn about and practice positive communication techniques, active listening, and how to resolve disagreements in personal and work relationships in a calm, positive and assertive manner.

Stress Management Techniques
If desired, I will teach students the principles of stress management, including mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises and Self-havening® to reduce stress and anxiety.
We can include guided meditations, affirmations and visualization exercises.

I check for private messages from the parents and teen at least once a day and respond to both the same day if not by the next day.

This offers fun, empathetic, supportive conversation and learning and builds the teen's character while respecting the family's values and moral system.

Although I have extensive knowledge and experience in mentoring, coaching and teaching teenagers and adults, please note that I am not a certified or licensed counselor, therapist, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist.
There can be no guarantees that the student will achieve the potential goals as this depends on many other factors outside my control.

Your teen MUST have both their video camera and microphone on during the live meetings. In a private 1:1 class mentoring is otherwise not possible. The tone of voice and facial expressions in a conversation are important to notice both by me and your teen too. Some of the conversations about communication will use this as teaching tools and involve role play.

Sensitive topics such as religion, politics, mental illness, or other topics that aren't in compliance with Outschool's policies will be kindly acknowledged to your teen and we will move on to other topics.
I will notify the parents/guardians after the live meeting if anything arises during our discussions in the live meetings that I feel may indicate vulnerabilities in your teen and need parental or professional attention I will alert you immediately.

Please note that if your teen is not present after the first 10 minutes of the live 1:1 online meeting then the meeting will be canceled for that day and no refunds given.

Please also review the outschool policies for parents, educators and students.
