Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
As a first grade teacher for 25 years for both struggling and gifted students (and all students in-between), I will use my expertise to customize support for your child in advancing their literacy skills.

I will assess your child's level and based on that a detailed plan for their growth and skill development will be created. The parent will receive this plan as well as access to a set of materials to have ready as we continue working together.

Instruction will be based on the needs of the child and the parent request

Reading Activities may include Guided Reading (Fiction and Non-Fiction Titles); Phonics and Phonemic Awareness, Sight Word Development; Vocabulary, Comprehension, and more. I use the website https://guidedreaders.com/ to access leveled reading books. I pay a subscription for this site and there is no additional charge to families to access.
Your child will be able to use several different strategies to become a fluent reader.

Writing Activities may include Interactive Journal, Patterned Innovative Writing; , Handwriting (I prefer to teach D’Nealian although will teach traditional manuscript if required); If appropriate and child is ready - we may do Writer’s Workshop (all steps of the writing process will be covered from Pre-Writing and organizing to rough draft to editing and revising; to publishing a final draft)

Parents will get a detailed report after each session as well as access to materials to extend your child's skill development.

I do recommend at least one session a week - two would be ideal for optimum growth. As long as the student continues with me, I will continue to customize their instruction and support them in progressing to fluency in reading and writing. So for that reason I recommend booking several weeks in advance.

Learning Goals

Your child will:
- increase their word attack skills - using phonics and other strategies to unlock new and longer words
- increase comprehension skills
- be able to read increasingly difficult texts (fiction and non- fiction)
If you would like writing to be a focus your child will:
- increase legibility of their penmanship
- write increasingly more complex sentences and stories/reports
Really whatever you want your child to learn - I can teach!

I love, love, love teaching primary students to love learning! I have 25+ years of experience working with Grade K-3 Students. I have 2 areas of focus here on OutSchool - 1. Individually Tutoring Beginning Readers and Writers and 2. Teaching small group Art Lessons (ages 6-9). I make learning fun and by doing so build confidence and enthusiasm about learning.
I am back after 2 years - (briefly did Consulting Work with an Ed Tech Company) and excited to provide customized and fun lessons for your child.
I now live in Memphis with my husband and little dog Shadow - who may visit our classes with her furry exuberance.
