My name is Harout, and you're probably here because you want to learn more about chess. Well, you've come to the right place. I've been playing chess since I was 10 years old and taught to K-8 students for the last 15 years. My classes ranged anywhere from 6-40 students as well as many private lessons. My chess rating is about 1850 USCF, so I'm willing to help anyone who will benefit from my years of knowledge and experience.

The rules of chess can be easy to learn (my kindergarten students were able to play after just one 30-minute lesson), but understanding the intricacies of the game is difficult. The more you learn, the more you discover that you don't know. Much of my teaching philosophy is based on John Dewey’s principles of education. I believe that students learn best when the subject matter is relevant to their everyday lives rather than abstract ideas that are detached from them. My master's thesis is a theoretical study on how chess can be used to teach many different subjects in the K-12 curriculum.

Aside from teaching chess, I have also taught sociology at the college level. I might also decide to offer some basic sociology courses (or Armenian language courses) here in the future. So please email me if either of those sound interesting. I've also played hockey since I was a kid, and am always excited to talk hockey with other fans!
