Class Experience
This is an interactive class best suited for children aged 11-16. We will explore what mindfulness is (the definition and how we might define it ourselves), why mindfulness might be useful and how we might use it in our daily lives. We will also think about how to breathe in in a mindful way, and how to breathe out. We will then bring this together and complete a few minutes of mindful, relaxation breathing. We also have the opportunity, when time allows, to explore mindful eating. Students can bring a small food item (raisin, small piece of chocolate, etc) for us to experience mindful eating together. The class involves a presentation to guide and structure the lesson. However, this is used as a prompt to foster and encourage students to discuss and participate in the class. The lesson does follow a structure as it moves from what mindfulness is through to breathing mindfully. Experiential exercises are included- including observing mindful analogies, being active and then encouraged to practise mindful breathing through different exercises. With each experiential exercise, students are encouraged to reflect upon and share their experience. The class involves us practicing strategies and skills, along with the space for your child to reflect on their experiences and consider what mindfulness means to them. This is important for children- being able to connect with how these principles and strategies apply to them as individuals and how this may work in their daily lives, makes them more likely to use the skills and strategies. My teaching style is fun- encouraging participation and reflective discussions and connecting with students' interests. Students don't need any background knowledge or experience before joining.
