Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
This class is an opportunity for learners wanting to specialize in more than one topic taught by Ms. Shiren in one class. Learners can mix and match topics to their preference, and Ms. Shiren will create a class around their needs and goals.

For world languages, you can have a beginner or intermediate level and come to class to specialize in grammar improvement, developing your vocabulary, practising your pronunciation and listening, or reading. Exposure to elements of culture in the language(s) selected can also be an option. Languages available include English, French, Spanish and introductory Mandarin Chinese. ESL language learners can also benefit from these classes!

For writing, focus can be on essay writing and finding the clarity in your expression; strengthening and practising vocabulary and grammar; focused reading study, advanced reading comprehension, and test preparation can also prepare students to be confident with these kinds of language skills. This service is available for English, Spanish or French, and can be mixed with writing and/or other language study. Mixing English writing lessons with a foreign language is a possibility in this class, with time dedicated to each subject.

Finally, learners of African Diaspora Studies may want to craft essays on topics related to the African Diaspora, and this may be a format to approach that content. Work in geography, history, social sciences or a deepening one-on-one study of a topic related to the African Diaspora or the topic of your choice is also possible. This class can be used to prepare for research studies leading to writing an essay on your preferred research topic.

Sample Assignments:
Teens: Guided Research Essay
Kids: Guided Research Presentation/Craft

Summary of areas you can mix and match from:
-Language Study, including vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking, available in English, Spanish and French

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of Toronto
I am a graduate of the University of Toronto Peace and Conflict Studies program (now Peace, Conflict and Justice), with a specialization in African Studies, and minors in Spanish and East Asian Studies. In addition to Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, I have also studied French extensively. I am fluent in French and Spanish, and have worked in French- and Spanish-speaking locations, including within Africa, Europe and Latin America; where I have also had the privilege of being exposed to cultural experiences in various expressions of the African Diaspora.

Later work and study also involved writing/publishing, filmmaking and mental health, which have influenced my perspectives and forms of expression.

I bring all of these aspects of my work and former study to my teaching and combine them with my passion for travel and intercultural cooperation, knowledge and understanding, which I hope to share with my learners along the way.

Given my own ancestry and interests, the intersection leads to a deep interest in the African Diaspora across the globe and learning more about these communities. I have also explored the Chinese/Asian diaspora, and diversity in general, in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa - at the intersection of African diasporic identity.

I have been teaching and mentoring independently in a casual capacity for almost twenty years, via tutoring, management of tutoring teams and event volunteers, and designing and instructing language classes, cultural events, or industry training and mentorship. However, alongside filmmaking, teaching has become a main aspect of my activities in the last two years.

I believe that in order to uncover their 'passions', students must feel a connection to the material they are learning in a way that feels personal. I hope to present information to my students in a way that they can find new connections with languages and global histories that they may not have been exposed to before, and hopefully inspire curiosity for further growth and learning, which can lead to greater expansion in an area of interest to them.
