Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This one-time class is an opportunity for LGBTQIA+ learners to explore and celebrate their identities through poetry. We will read and listen to poems by several LGBTQIA+ poets (spoken word and written). Learners will have the opportunity to discuss identities throughout the class. Students will then use poetry prompts to write their own identity poems, with the opportunity to share them with their peers. We will end class by writing a collaborative pantoum that students will receive a copy of.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.

I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!

I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
