Class Experience

I have used these lessons with wild success in countless classes of young actors. I base them from Nina Czitrom's book, "Take a Bow: Lesson Plans for Preschool Drama" Each class allows children to engage their imaginations and join in gently coached pretend. I am a theatre teacher who teaches ever-revolving groups of children ages 3-20. These pretend adventures are the first step to exercising one's imagination and learning to move and speak freely for a stage, as well as interacting with a director. The stories give lots of space for children to come up with their own ways to react to what is happening in our pretend world and that fosters creativity.

We will go on three pretend adventures:

Day #1: Trip to Space: In this class we go to space! We make our own spaceship and dress up and buckle up! We stop on the way to Mars to see the clouds, the stars, and the sun. When we get to mars we meet a Martian which is a little scary at first until we find out she's a friend. On the way home, time allowing, we stop again to say goodbye to all the fun stops until once again arriving home.

Day #2: Day at the Beach: In this class we plan a trip to the beach! We pack our bags with everything we'll need for our fun day and we take a bus to get there. It's bumpy! When we arrive at the beach we put on our sunglasses, our hats, our swimsuits and our sun lotion and then we make fabulous sand castles. Next we play in the water and find little fish. We eat our lunches and splash some more and then take the bus home again.

Day #3: Trip to the Pet Store. In this class we decide to visit a pet store and learn about the different animals! We meet and play with (and become!) cats, dogs, birds, fish, rabbits and snakes. The best part is when we get to choose a pet to take home and we learn what it will mean to take care of that animal. We go to the register and pay the money and receive our new friend.

Hello! I've been teaching theatre for 26 years and I was also a children's performer for ten of those years. I own a theatre program and I put on a show after every 20 hours of instruction (almost 60 shows in six years!). I teach children ages 3-20. I've been teaching in some capacity since 1996: public, private, homeschool, online.

I believe EVERYONE needs and wants to be creative and expressive. Sydney Clemens says "Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else" and my goal is to allow students a safe place to explore and shine and comfortably be themselves.
