Class Experience

In this extension of the Preschool Circle Time Class students will be working on math and literacy skills in a small group settings. This is a very hands on class and students are active and engaged during the whole class. One day during the week will have a literacy focus of letters, sight words, name writing, story comprehension and more. The other day will focus on math skills like counting, shapes, patterns, measuring and more. Students are encouraged, but never forced, too actively participate with classmates and engage with each other to promote a great classroom community.

It is important to structure the lesson so students are able to practice the material that we are learning. I use the gradual release of responsibility method when teaching. First I will model the lesson, then we will work on the skill together, then students will be asked to try the lesson on their own. I will provide a one month calendar so you are able to know what materials and supplies are needed for the month. I recommend adult supervision because of the age of the learners, this way if there are any technical issues they have assistance nearby.

November 30- practice name building and recognizes the letters in our name with a focus on the sight word is and the letter T
December 2- count and compare quantities in a group.
December 7- letter sounds, sight word the, letter S
December 9- number cards and recognizing what those numbers mean (1= one dot)
December 20- story retelling and character identification, sight word no, letter A
December 22- Bigger than, smaller than, equal too and measuring different items
Learning Goals
Students will be practicing one to one correspondence when counting objects.
Students will recognize letters in their own name.
Students will communicate with peers in their class.
Students will work on fine motor skills by grasping writing tools and using play dough.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Miss Alex. I am very excited to focus on social emotional development in students who are 3-5 years old. I plan to teach classes about emotions, problem solving, and communication with others. In a young students life these are such important challenges that come up daily and without the proper skills to address them students can easily become frustrated. It is important to teach them the skills for a successful educational career early. I am a Pre-School teacher in a public school in New Jersey and I absolutely love what I do. I believe in the power of play and I believe in importance of discovery. Allowing students to explore the world around them creates the curiosity we need to raise a successful future generation. I started teaching 5th grade Language arts and when my school noticed how heavily I included social emotional learning into 5th grade they felt I should give Pre-School a try and I fell in love!
