Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
Beginner Level
Hello and welcome to my class page! I am a master's level certified and licensed teacher with 27 years in public education. As a former preschool, kindergarten, and elementary classroom teacher, I am very passionate about teaching! I strive to share and impart my excitement about learning! I take pleasure in teaching, and I am patient in working with children. I provide a safe, and caring classroom environment for each child to learn and grow to their fullest potential.
I have taught many ESL students in person and online. Before finding Outschool, I was teaching English as a Second Language to students in Asia.

Each child is unique, and no two learners are alike. One student may learn more quickly than a classmate, but I believe all children have the potential to learn.
After I received my Master's Degree in Library Science, for the last 18 years in public education, I was the librarian/media coordinator of the entire elementary school. I taught all students from preschool-5th grade in several classes weekly. I taught many subjects: reading, language arts, Internet safety, social studies, geography, science, math, information skills, and how to find books in a library. I checked out hundreds of books weekly in every class and shared my love of learning to read with the students.

Each week a letter, number, color, and shape will be introduced. The students will be actively engaged in their learning through activity sheets and through participating in the exercises we will do in the class. The students will learn the phonemic sound associated with each letter, how to write each letter, and learn words that begin with each letter. The students will hear a weekly story for each letter of the alphabet. Each week the students will learn 3-4 high-frequency sight words and will read sentences with these words. We will have Sharing Day on Friday. The students will be encouraged to bring an item to share that begins with the letter we are learning that week.

In the second and third classes of the week, the students will be working with more activities pertaining to the letter of the week, numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, sorting, simple addition, or another math activity, and reviewing our sight words. Students will have weekly activity sheets that will be shared for all the activities of each class.
All the activities are lessons that pertain to the Common Core and State Aligned Standards that are taught in public schools in the United States.

In these classes, I will use screen sharing of interactive slides I have created. Some of the slides will be downloadable activity sheets the teacher and students will do together in class. It would be best if the family has access to a printer for these activity sheets if possible. They can be printed in grayscale-black ink to save on color ink. These sheets can be kept in a 3-ring binder under the alphabet letter of the week. During the duration of this class, you will receive many activity sheets that can be used for the review of what they are learning. Research shows that children learn by repetition and review, so I encourage my parents to keep the completed activity sheets in an organized binder divided into the weekly alphabet letters we will learn. You can even run a second copy as a master sheet.

All the students will begin to learn as soon as they enroll. If your child missed the beginning first lessons on the beginning letters of the alphabet, this class will repeat and start over when we get to the end of the alphabet. Your child can join this class at ANY TIME. ESL Learners are welcome!

Below are the topics we will cover weekly in our classes.
The class is 35 minutes per class, but we may go over a few minutes as we cover a lot of materials.
Topics we will cover:
* Days of the week
* Month/Date (current date)
* Seasons
* Letter of the week (practice identifying, writing, and saying letter sounds)
* Learning to read words using picture clues for each letter of the week
* High-frequency- sight words: These are taken from a commonly used list in kindergarten classes in the United States. There are
   100 words on the list, we start with 3 per week and increase to 5 depending on when you start the class.
* Students will be reading sentences every class using these high-frequency sight words.
* Color of the week (practice identifying)
* The shape of the week (practice identifying)
* Math Skills (numbers 0 to 100.  Counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's to a hundred.
* Simple addition and subtraction
* Before and after numbers
* Patterns- seeing a pattern and finishing the pattern
* Sorting objects into a given group
* Fractions-simple fractions 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4
* During our Friday class, students will each share an item that begins with the letter we are learning for the week.

****I have written and/or created and own the copyrights to all the materials in these lessons. This includes the student activity sheets, stories written, and all the slides used in all of my classes.

We will have classes three times a week. Some classes are on M, W, F, and other classes are on T, W, F.
I hope to see your precious learner in my class! I look forward to working with them to learn and grow in their educational journey! The students will receive a certificate of completion when they finish the 26 - week class.

Supply List
The teacher will weekly upload and post the activity sheets in the class that will be needed for each week. Students will use a pencil or pen to write with. These sheets would be good to keep in a 3 letter binder so they can be reviewed after the classes. The students will learn to read weekly sight words in sentences. These will continue to build and by the end of the course, the students will have learned almost 100 words from a national sight word list that is used across America.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
