This preparatory class for the Quebec Ministry of Education reading exam focuses on helping Grade 6 students develop the skills needed to analyze a literary text effectively. The class will be conducted entirely in French, and learners will engage in a mix of guided reading, interactive discussions, and practical exercises. What will be taught? Students will learn how to approach a literary text using four key dimensions evaluated in the exam: Comprehension: Identifying explicit information and organizing it. Interpretation: Making inferences and understanding the author’s intent. Critical Judgment: Evaluating the text's logic, credibility, and interest. Appreciation: Forming and justifying a personal opinion based on textual elements. What topics will you cover? The characteristics of literary texts (narrative, descriptive, and poetic). Strategies for annotating and analyzing texts. How to approach and answer typical exam questions for each of the four dimensions. How is your class structured? Introduction (10 minutes): Overview of literary texts and the four evaluated dimensions. Guided Reading (25 minutes): Students will read and annotate a provided text with my guidance, focusing on characters, setting, actions, and authorial intent. Practice Exercise (20 minutes): Learners will independently answer exam-style questions based on the text. Discussion and Feedback (10 minutes): I will review their answers, clarify misconceptions, and provide additional tips and strategies. How will you teach? I will use a combination of: Slides and visuals to illustrate key concepts and strategies. Live discussions to encourage interaction and engagement. Step-by-step guidance to help students navigate complex questions. Written exercises to practice answering exam-style questions. *** Teaching will be done entirely in French, with a clear and supportive approach tailored to each learner's needs. *** What’s your teaching style? I believe in creating a supportive and interactive learning environment where students feel confident to participate and ask questions. My teaching style is: Structured yet flexible: The lesson plan ensures we cover all critical topics, but I adapt to the pace of the group. Interactive: Students will engage through discussions and collaborative activities. Practical and exam-focused: Every activity is designed to prepare learners specifically for the reading exam. How much will learners interact with you? Students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with me during the class: Direct participation: They will answer questions, share interpretations, and discuss their thoughts on the text. Feedback: I will provide personalized feedback on their answers to ensure they understand and improve. Collaborative exercises: Students will work together to analyze key elements of the text (when appropriate for group size). By the end of the class, students will leave with confidence in their ability to decode literary texts and tackle exam questions effectively.
