Each week the learner will be given a practice sheet for the student to complete on their own time. It should take 30 to 60 minutes to complete the entire practice sheet.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 8
This class is part 2 of 4 all about pre-algebra. In this class, the learner will gain the building blocks needed to move forward and be prepared for algebra and other math concepts. We will be talking about ratios, proportions, fraction to decimal conversion, scale drawings, percent, finding the percent of a number, fraction to percent conversion, percent decrease, discounts and sale price, percent increase, calculating mark-up, simple interest, commission, percents less than 1, profits and royalties, compound interest, percents greater than 100, mean, median, frequency distribution, mode, range, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, box-and-whisker plots, circle graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs, probability, odds, combined probabilities, the principle of counting, permutations, combinations, events, and expected value. I will be teaching the concept using slides and lecture-type format, the learner(s) will practice the concept with me, and then I check for understanding. I make sure to allow time for questions or more practice for concepts that are more challenging. Each session the learner will be given a practice sheet to complete on their own time. I will review the practice sheet at the beginning of each session. Weekly break down of concepts taught: Week 1: Ratios, proportions, fraction to decimal conversion, scale drawings Week 2: Percent, finding the percent of a number, fraction to percent conversion Week 3: Percent decrease, discounts, and sale price, percent increase, calculating mark-up Week 4: Simple interest, commission, percents less than 1, profits and royalties, compound interest, percents greater than 100 Week 5: Mean, median, frequency distribution, mode, range, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, box-and-whisker plots Week 6: Circle graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs Week 7: Probability, odds, combined probabilities, the principle of counting Week 8: Permutations, combinations, events, expected value, and review of previous weeks This class will be fast paced but will cover many concepts. If the student were to take all 4 of my pre-algebra courses they would have a full year of pre-algebra completed. I also offer classes on many of these concepts individually for a slower more in depth approach as well.
Other Details
Supply List
paper and pencil are needed for each class The student may want to take notes in a notebook but it is not required. A basic calculator may come in handy for some of the more challenging concepts and problems. I will supply the practice sheets in the classroom every week. In the final week, I will include an answer sheet so the learner can check their work on their own.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
