US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
These weekly classes are designed to expand learners' core vocabulary through a structured approach. Class Format: Vocabulary Practice: Students will define words, identify their parts of speech, and practice usage in sentences. The teacher will introduce each word and provide an example sentence. Then, students will create their own sentences using the targeted words. Paragraph Writing: After vocabulary practice, students will write a paragraph aiming to incorporate as many of the day’s vocabulary words as possible. This reinforces word meaning and application in context. Throughout the session, the teacher will guide and assist students, ensuring they understand each word and its usage. A Google Doc template will be available for students to use during class, or they may opt for a personal notebook. The teacher will screen-share the document to facilitate learning and provide a clear example. Each session will adapt to cover as many words as possible, without set themes or lists, allowing for flexible enrollment. Since each class is independent, students can join or pause participation as needed. For paragraph writing, students will complete the work within class time. If additional time is needed, they may finish as homework and share their paragraphs for feedback. Sample: Here are six advanced vocabulary words ideal for high school academic writers, along with their definitions and usage examples: Ameliorate Meaning: To improve or make something better, especially a situation or condition. Example: "The new policies were implemented to ameliorate working conditions for employees." Conundrum Meaning: A complex or difficult problem that is often puzzling. Example: "The ethical implications of artificial intelligence present a significant conundrum for modern society." Juxtaposition Meaning: Placing two elements close together for contrasting effect. Example: "The author uses juxtaposition to highlight the differences between rural and urban lifestyles in the novel." Salient Meaning: Most noticeable or important; prominent. Example: "One of the salient points in the report was the need for immediate environmental action." Ubiquitous Meaning: Present or existing everywhere; widespread. Example: "With smartphones becoming ubiquitous, access to information has never been easier." Efficacy Meaning: The ability to produce a desired or intended result. Example: "The efficacy of the new educational program is still being evaluated through ongoing studies." These words help convey precise and sophisticated ideas, which is valuable in academic writing at the high school level.
