Class Experience

The following songs are some of my all-time favorites! I hope my students share an appreciation for them.

1. "I'll Make A Man Out Of You"/"Hombres de Acción," from Mulan

2. "Go The Distance"/"Llegaré a Mi Meta" from Hercules

I, the teacher, assume that students enjoy the songs listed above and are already experts on speaking and reading English. This course is intended for complete beginners.

Students will see two sets of lyrics upon enrollment. The first side-by-side pair is the original English lyrics and the adapted Spanish translation. The second pair is the translation and the mostly literal English translation I've derived (idioms being a topic intended for a more advanced course). The first of these is meant as a stepping stone to start the conversation on the differences that occur between the adaptation and the English translation (for example, cognates, facial movements, rhyming). Class will focus on the second set of lyrics.

Pronunciation, basic grammatical forms (1-4 word sentences), and vocabulary will be practiced as a precursor to the songs. Students will be asked to repeat, read, and apply their personal experiences to the material. While singing is optional, they will be encouraged to sing because the act of singing has proven useful from an educational standpoint in helping to improve memory. We will watch the adapted Spanish version after we have studied the lyrics. We will watch the adapted Spanish version after we have studied the lyrics on YouTube. In the interest of autonomy, students will be allowed a short break mid-class as needed (~3 minutes).

Thank you for considering my class! Please note if the times do not work for you I'd be open to suggested times particularly on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday prior to 2 PM EST. Please feel free to follow me at my Youtube channel for further information on this class and more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1Uk8ZiK4PY

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught on Outschool for a year now to classes of up to 5 students. I also have two years experience working one-on-one with students learning English online, as well as 7 years as a speech-language pathologist. My entire career has been oriented towards helping small groups meet a common goal. I am keenly interested in a student's motivations, their experiences, and the skills they bring to the table. While every class is different, I practically always come away with having learned from what my students tell me. In terms of Spanish, I have spoken Spanish and English since birth and have completed continuing education in bilingual language acquisition beyond my master's degree.
