Class Experience

My teaching style is calm and encouraging. I like to help learners to do their best and have fun, without making them feel pressured to do things perfectly.
In our first lesson, we will go over the basics of pottery. Using slides, we will look at a quick lesson on the history of clay and pots.
Following this, I will demonstrate how to make a pinch pot from a ball of clay. Following step-by-step photos as well as my demonstration, learners will be able to make their own pinch pot. I will explain that after allowing it to dry, we can use acrylic paint to decorate the pots.
In lesson two we will learn how to roll out clay to make a slab. We will look at slides of different objects that start out as slabs of clay. Then using step-by-step instructions we will roll out our own slabs. We will also learn how to add texture to our slabs. Learners will be given some ideas to choose from in order to build their own slab project, including a wall hanging and a heart-shaped trinket dish.
In our third lesson, we will learn how to roll coils and put them together to make a dish. We will look at slides to learn the score and slip method of joining pieces of clay. Using our previous knowledge we will make a cupcake-shaped dish with a pinch pot bottom and a coiled lid.
In the final lesson of this series, we will finish painting our projects from previous lessons using acrylic paint and mod podge. We will also review all the techniques we have learned. Using our hand-building skills, each learner may choose their own unique project to work on this week.

Learning Goals

In this class, learners will experiment with a variety of pottery techniques. They will work on developing small motor skills, increase their creativity, and have fun making functional and artistic pottery projects.

Hi, I'm Ms. Colleen.
I'm an Early Childhood Educator and home educating parent. I have my degree in Child Study from Mount Saint Vincent University and I have been teaching for 30 years. I am also a certified EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instructor. I speak both English and French. In 2020 I discovered my love of teaching online. I guess every cloud really does have a silver lining! My family and I live in beautiful Atlantic Canada. I'm excited to share fun and interactive learning activities with your children! Teaching is truly my passion and that shines through in my lessons. My teaching style is calm, patient, and warm. I believe that childhood is a journey, not a race. I love to learn new things and I try to instill a love of learning through my lessons. I love to laugh. I like to incorporate singing into my lessons because I believe it helps learners relax and absorb information, especially when learning a new language. I hope to see you soon in one of my classes!
