Class Experience

Hello learners and parents!
In this six week course we will be looking at six of the most popular fiddle tunes around today. These are tunes every beginning fiddle player definitely needs in their repertoire! The tunes will all be taught note for note by ear using correct note names (although learners who play strictly by fret numbers can be accommodated). It is not necessary for your learner to be able to read music yet. However, sheet music can be provided for any learners who already read music. All tunes will be taught at a beginner level.

The tunes we will be learning in order will be:

Week one: Soldier’s Joy

Week two: Liberty

Week three: St. Anne’s Reel

Week four: Mississippi Sawyer

Week five: Little Liza Jane

Week six: Old Joe Clark

This class will be followed by two similar series of classes also focused on popular fiddle tunes, including such jam session standards as Whiskey Before Breakfast, Bill Cheathum, and Orange Blossom Special.

If your learner is already familiar with all these fiddle standards please check out my other fiddle class listings!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!

Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.

I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
