This is a 4-week comprehensive breakdown of the most popular music genres today and their unique features. This class will also dive into the historical context that brought these genres into popularity. We will discuss the rhythmic style and instruments that are used for each style of music. This class is suitable for: - Students that enjoy listening to music - Students that are (or are not) musicians - Students that want to deepen their appreciation and understanding of music Week 1 - Intro discussion about students' experience with music, perceptions, favorite styles of music, and the reasons why. - Rhythm Exercises - History discussion about the roots of modern music styles Week 2 - Breakdown of the popular music styles and history, including: Pop Rock Country Hip Hop Blues/R&B Week 3 - Breakdown of additional popular music styles and history, including: Folk Jazz Soul Metal Funk Techno Reggae Week 4 - Breakdown of popular international music styles, including Flamenco Latin - Discussion and takeaways for students when listening to music or trying to play/create their own music.
