Polymer Clay Millefiori Sculpting "Canes" for Beads, Jewelry & More: FLOWERS
What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Learn to make those tiny flower slices, using the Millefiori caning technique. Learn to reduce your canes to fit whatever size you need for your Miniatures, Jewelry, Sculpture. Intermediate Level Polymer Clay Art Sculpting The technique of caning clay is an intermediate level, due to tiny rolled and sectioned portions of clay. For the best experience, I recommend taking at least one other polymer clay sculpture course first. This will help with the feel of working with this type of clay. Canes are delicate before baking and require some patience. These are also referred to as Millefiori. We will work together, preparing, rolling, and "sculpting" our Flower Logs. Then we will use a Reducing technique to create smaller versions of Flowers. This technique is used by all Caning artists. Slicing the cane after reducing is super satisfying! You won't believe you created something so tiny and detailed! Other Caning courses will be available as well. The supplies needed are: Polymer Baked Clay : Any colors you choose (minimum of 4) *Important to note: Canes need a stiffer clay, like Sculpey or FIMO. Many of the online brands sold in bulk are way too soft and bleed together. The student's experience may differ based on quality of clay. A sharp clay cutting tool (I use a long clay cutting blade) A nonstick rolling pin (I like acrylic) A nonstick surface (I like acrylic or glass) Optional for this class, but recommended for more advanced Canes: An inexpensive Pasta Machine (about $25 US on Amazon) Polymer clay requires baking after class. 275F/135C for 20 minutes or less.

Hi There!
I'm Lori...a graduate of F.I.T in NYC. I've worked in different areas of the design industry since 1991, from illustration, pattern making, garment construction to designing full story boards for buyers. I tutored Fashion Illustration for a few years to help other students complete their professional portfolios before their interviews. Besides getting creative, I LOVE animals! I have quite a few furry little beasts. Right now, my profession is Graphic Design, but fashion illustration and design is still what I do when I need to unwind from technology. I believe that once you learn the basics of how to get that creativity out of your mind and onto paper, you open up a whole new world, being able to share and build on your talents.
*Teacher Rori
They/Them
As an alumni of Cleveland Institute of Art with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Game Design they have a passion for interactive art and how they can push the boundaries of what interactive art means. Having been a visual arts assistant at their old high school Interlochen Arts Academy during the summers, teaching others and seeing the joy in what people create has motivated Rori to pursue teaching. In their free time Rori likes to aquascape. Creating aquariums of any variety of sizes and making little beautiful habitats for their favorite type of fish a Betta fish, they currently have 2 bettas and 4 tanks.

She/Her
Throughout my career in education, I have developed a strong foundation for fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. I have had the privilege of designing and implementing art programs that engage learners and inspire them to explore their unique artistic voices in many afterschool programs since 2019. My extensive experience across various mediums—such as painting, yarn and needlework, jewelry making, and digital arts—has equipped me with the versatility to adapt my teaching methods and cater to diverse learning styles.
*Teacher Jonathan
I have been working in the design/visual arts world for the last 6 years. From designing websites, to doing personal commissions, art is something I’m very passionate about. I had the chance to live in New York for the last 3 years, and had the opportunity to visit world-renowned museums and galleries such as The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim etc. I also curated an Art Gallery with over 200 artworks from local artists in upstate NY. I’m thrilled to bring my experience to these lessons and share that enthusiasm with my students.
