Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
In this one-time class, students will build essential foundational skills in order to identify, evaluate, and assign verbs and adverbs to their favorite Pokémon characters. Students will leave this class with a solid understanding of how verbs and adverbs can be used to describe actions among different Pokémon. As an extension to this lesson, we will also explore the differences between verbs and other parts of speech, such as adjectives and nouns. We will use Pokémon characters as the basis of our study in order to brainstorm different ways in which we can describe the actions of these complex "creatures". By developing a strong understanding of verbs and adverbs, students will ultimately strengthen their writing skills in language arts and other subject areas. We will begin class with an informal discussion where students can share information about their favorite Pokémon characters. This discussion will be followed by an interactive introduction to verbs and adverbs with an opportunity for students to practice matching actions to pictures. Students will then listen to a short story about a Pokémon adventure and keep a personal count of the verbs they hear as I am reading. After we complete the interactive matching activity and short story, we will extend our learning by writing our own action sentences about our Pokémon characters. We will end the lesson with an opportunity for students to voluntarily share their sentences.

I have been a teacher for 8 years and I absolutely love what I do! I have taught 3 years of first grade, 1 year of fourth grade, 2 years of fifth grade, and 2 years of special education K-5th grade. I also have experience in technology, as I served in the United States Navy as an Information Systems Technician.

In my classroom, both in-person and online, there is a direct focus on fostering meaningful discussions to help guide learning. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts and discoveries while asking questions along the way. Knowledge is power!

Outside of the classroom, I am a mom to three beautiful daughters named Iris, Lucy, and Faith. We live in the state of Florida and love our beautiful beaches and warm weather. We are the proud owners of pet chickens, dogs, and cats. Our favorite thing to do away from home is to go camping and enjoy nature.

I hope to see you in class!
