US Grade 2 - 4
*In this one-time class, students will build essential foundational skills in order to identify, evaluate, and compare facts and opinions using their favorite Pokémon characters. *We will begin class with an informal discussion where students can share facts and opinions about their favorite Pokémon characters. This discussion will be followed by an interactive introduction to facts and opinions with an opportunity for students to practice making factual statements and opinion-based statements about their Pokémon character; for example, "Pikachu is a yellow mouse" (fact) as opposed to "Pikachu is an adorable creature" (opinion). *The second half of class will include an interactive "Kahoot" game where students will choose whether or not the given statement is a fact or an opinion. *We will end class with a chance for students to show off their favorite personal Pokemon items. *Students will leave this class with a solid understanding of how to distinguish between a fact and an opinion. We will use Pokémon characters as the basis of our study in order to determine whether or not written and spoken statements are factual or opinion-based. By developing a strong understanding of how facts and opinions differ, students will ultimately strengthen their reading and writing skills in language arts and other subject areas.
Learning Goals
At the conclusion of this class, students will be able to effectively distinguish between a factual statement and an opinion-based statement.
