Class Experience

In this class, students will learn beginner creative writing techniques and apply them as they write short stories about their Pokemon cards. Each week I will give a prompt, and they will pick one of their cards to write about. A picture's worth a thousand words. Using the pictures on their favorite cards for inspiration will help make writing fun.

I will start class by presenting writing techniques and the writing prompt. We will then look at a Pokemon card and discuss as a class how that would apply to the prompt. Students will then be able to choose a card of their own and write about it, using the prompt. Once they finish, they will read their story out loud to the class. If we have additional time, students will be able to write another story, using another card. What they don't finish in class will be homework, which is due before the next class session. Each short story should be around 50-100 words/less than a notebook page long.

I am a very relaxed teacher that encourages questions and discussion. I strive to give everyone a chance to speak. I want my classroom to be a safe environment where students can unleash their creativity. Learners will be able to interact by discussing their stories and Pokemon cards with each other.

While spelling and grammar are not the main focus of this class, students should have a good enough grasp on it where their writing is understandable.

Weekly Breakdown:
Week 1: How to write detailed descriptions. Prompt: Write a description of your favorite Pokemon card.
Week 2: How to write point of view. Prompt: What would happen if the Pokemon in your card came to life?
Week 3: How to write action. Prompt: Write about a Pokemon battle between two cards.
Week 4: How to write emotion. Prompt: Pick a card and write about the events in the picture.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to enjoy writing with the help of their favorite Pokemon Cards. They will learn beginning techniques like writing descriptions, point of view, writing action, and writing emotions. Since this is a beginner writing class, students will not be graded on their writing skills. Instead the purpose of this class is to let them dip their toes into creative writing and have fun.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from Indiana University
I received my minor in creative writing from Indiana University Northwest. During my time there, I took many writing workshops and honed my skills. Several of my short stories have been published in independent zines. I also have experience with writing and revising a novel. Many of my close colleagues have literary agents and are on the road to publication. I have acted as a critique partner for them, helping them get their stories to a publishable level. I also am very knowledgeable about the writing industry and what it takes to improve one's creative writing.
