CLASS SUMMARY In this multi-day class, you’ll learn to create figurative language and imagery + gain experience writing poetry. These poetic devices are used by songwriters and poets alike, and your favorite songs probably contain both. You will practice these skills and then use them in your own poems. You may write rhyming poetry or free verse in class because you ALWAYS have complete control over your style of writing. Sharing is always voluntary. CLASS STRUCTURE ✔️ Opening 5 minute “break the ice” activity ✔️ Short creative writing starter designed to engage your thinking ✔️ Instruction and demonstration with examples ✔️ Skill practice and poetry “deep-dive” ✔️ Voluntary share out ✔️ (Optional) Revise, edit and finish the poem on your own AGENDA Week 1 Figurative language (similes & metaphors) + in-class poetry writing practice Week 2 Imagery + in-class poetry exercise Week 3 Robert Frost poetic devices + a poetry exercise Week 4 Songwriting is poetry: Taylor Swift figurative language + a poetry exercise TEACHER EXPERTISE ✔ certified English teacher with 30 years of teaching experience ✔ published freelance writer with poetry and narratives appearing in Coping with Cancer, Sasee Magazine and the international bestselling books, Chicken Soup for the Soul. MY TEACHING STYLE ✔ I’m friendly ✔ My #1 priority is creating a safe, enjoyable space ✔ It’s important to me to give you a quality, fun, 5-STAR experience every time REQUIRED EXPERIENCE If you aren't sure about your poetry skills, I urge you to try this class. Poetry isn't like other types of writing. It's very stylistic, and that's why perfect grammar, for example, isn't required. Because of this, sometimes a self-proclaimed "average" writer makes a great poet! It's been my experience that the most hesitant kids turn out to be the surprise talents. I speak from experience as I was one of those kids.
Learning Goals
Students will understand the purpose of figurative language in poetry and be able to use examples in their writing.
