Once upon a class time cheery, students will understand this poem quite clearly.
When students study poetry, they not only learn to interpret the meaning behind the words, but also gain an understanding and appreciation of poetic devices.  As students read this famous poem, they will not only learn the story behind the poem, but also gain an understanding of alliteration, assonance, and internal rhyme. 
They will “nevermore” be able to say that they are unfamiliar with these words, Poe’s unique style, or the poetic devices used to craft this masterpiece.
Learning Goals
Students will recognize the poetic devices Poe employed, including alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme. In addition, students will be exposed to new vocabulary, and use context clues to determine meaning.

Parental Guidance
This poem deals with the topic of mourning and supernatural elements. The raven in the poem is accused of being a demon that taunts the narrator with the fact that he will no longer be able to see his lost love. The focus of this lesson is on the poetic devices used, and comprehension of the poem. Although there are supernatural elements, they are mentioned only to foster understanding and are not the focus of the lesson.
