Students will examine diverse poems (including poets Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ross Gay, Mary Oliver, and more) and then write an easily accessible poem of their own. We will take time to relish how the devices of poetry create language flow and connection. Examining repetition, rhythm, rhyme, metaphor, word choice, and figurative langue in these poems, we will explore how poems attract. Moving onto writing, students will discover how they have the tools within to do the same. Students will have options to use models to write their own poem or use provided guidance to craft from imagination. Week 1: Gwendolyn Brooks - rhyme, rhythm Week 2: Ross Gay, Mary Oliver - setting, meaning Week 3: Langston Hughes - metaphor, repetition Week 4: Chato Villalobos - meaning, allusion, connecting to your story
